Maldivian Taekwondo Athlete Yunus Earns Bronze at Malaysia’s Prestigious Hana Open

Young Maldivian taekwondo athlete Yunus bin Mohamed Quraishi has made a proud mark by clinching third place at the highly competitive Hana Open Taekwondo Championship currently taking place in Malaysia.
A Tough Tournament with Elite Competition
The Hana Open stands as Malaysia’s largest club-level taekwondo tournament, attracting approximately 2,000 athletes from various regions, all vying for top honors. Yunus competed in the 12 to 14-year age group, where he faced 17 other skilled fighters in a fierce contest for the title.
Demonstrating impressive skill and determination, Yunus won three consecutive matches, advancing confidently to the semi-final round. His performance throughout the early rounds showcased both technical prowess and strategic fighting instincts, earning him well-deserved respect among competitors and spectators alike.
Injury Challenges but Spirit Remains Unbroken
Unfortunately, Yunus sustained a shoulder injury during the semi-final match, testing both his resilience and focus. Despite the setback, he managed to win the first round of the semi-final, showing remarkable grit and determination. However, the injury affected his ability to maintain the same level of performance in the subsequent rounds, leading to a third-place finish.
Though disappointed not to advance to the final, Yunus’s achievement remains a testament to his talent and hard work, especially considering the high level of competition at this event.
Building on Past Success
This bronze medal adds to Yunus’s growing list of accomplishments. Notably, he secured a gold medal earlier in July 2023 at the Intra Club Kirgi Taekwondo Championship in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. His consistent success at international tournaments highlights him as one of Maldives’ promising young athletes with a bright future ahead.
With such a strong showing in Malaysia despite injury, many are eager to see what Yunus will achieve next. His dedication and competitive spirit shine as an inspiration for young athletes in the Maldives and beyond.
