Investigation Underway After $30,000 in Seized Cash Disappears from Police Storage

The Maldives Police Service has launched an investigation after discovering that a substantial sum of dollars seized in a 2019 operation has gone missing.

According to a statement issued to the media tonight, the cash was originally confiscated in connection with a case registered on September 15, 2019. On August 13, 2025, authorities identified a discrepancy amounting to USD 30,000.

The Criminal Investigation Command of the Maldives Police Service is now leading a formal inquiry into the missing funds. Investigators are working to determine how the cash disappeared and whether any procedural lapses contributed to the loss.

In addition to the missing cash, police reported that a bag containing damaged currency notes was recovered from the storage area where the seized money had been kept. Forensic teams are examining these notes to determine their origin and whether they are connected to the missing amount.

Police have not disclosed the specific case from which the money was originally seized, citing the ongoing nature of the investigation. Authorities have assured the public that all necessary measures are being taken to track the missing funds and hold responsible parties accountable.

The investigation highlights concerns over the handling and security of confiscated cash, and updates are expected as the inquiry progresses.
