Maldives Welcomes 1.5 Million Tourists So Far in 2025, China Leads Arrivals

The Maldives has welcomed more than 1.5 million visitors so far this year, according to the latest figures from the Ministry of Tourism. The milestone highlights the continued strength of the country’s tourism industry, which remains the backbone of its economy.

As of Sunday, the official Daily Tourism Report recorded 1,520,699 tourist arrivals. This marks a 9.7 percent increase compared to the same period in 2024, when arrivals stood at 1,386,554. On average, about 6,232 travelers are landing in the Maldives each day.

In the first week of September alone, 33,733 visitors were registered. This is a notable 23.6 percent rise year-on-year, showing steady momentum as the high season approaches.

China continues to dominate as the Maldives’ top source market in 2025. With 240,828 arrivals, Chinese visitors now make up 15.8 percent of the total market share.

Other key contributors include Russia, the United Kingdom, Italy, and Germany. Each of these countries has already sent over 100,000 tourists this year, reaffirming the Maldives’ broad international appeal.

When it comes to accommodation, resorts continue to be the preferred option. Nearly three out of four tourists (73.4 percent) chose to stay at resorts, while the rest opted for guesthouses, hotels, and liveaboards. This trend highlights the enduring allure of the Maldives’ luxury resort experience, paired with its signature white-sand beaches and turquoise lagoons.

Last year, the Maldives made history by surpassing 2 million annual arrivals for the first time. Building on that success, the government has set its sights on reaching 2.3 million visitors by the end of 2025.

With steady growth from both Asian and European markets, along with increased global connectivity, officials remain optimistic about hitting this ambitious goal. For many in the industry, these figures not only reflect the Maldives’ popularity as a world-class destination but also the resilience of its tourism sector in a competitive global market.
