MVR 27.9 Million Distributed to Maldives Political Parties

The Elections Commission has announced that a total of MVR 27.9 million has been disbursed to five political parties in the Maldives. The payments target parties with a membership exceeding 10,000, as per the regulations under the Political Parties Act.

Funds are distributed based on membership numbers recorded at the time of the budget’s approval. The payments have already been processed and deposited into the respective party accounts.

People's National Congress (PNC): MVR 13.31 million

Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP): MVR 8.45 million

Jumhoori Party: MVR 2.65 million

Adhaalath Party: MVR 1.7 million

Maldives Development Alliance (MDA): MVR 1.7 million

The Elections Commission explained that under the Political Parties Act, political parties receive 0.1 percent of the projected revenue included in the annual State budget.

For this disbursement, the commission calculated the amount at a rate of MVR 193 per member. Only parties with at least 10,000 members as of December last year qualified for the funding.

According to the Elections Commission, current membership numbers are:

PNC: 68,665 members

MDP: 43,765 members

The other three parties also meet the minimum membership requirement, allowing them to receive the allocated funds.

This distribution marks one of the regular annual allocations from the State budget to support the operations of political parties with substantial membership.
