Former Maldives President Waheed's Ties to Jeffrey Epstein Revealed in Document Releases

Newly unsealed documents from the estate of convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein have revealed a surprising connection with former Maldives President Dr. Mohamed Waheed Hassan Manik. Released in stages by U.S. authorities since August 2025, the files include emails, personal meetings, and advisory consultations that suggest Waheed reached out to Epstein both during and after his presidency.

The revelations raise questions about the extent of their interactions within Epstein’s broader network of influential global figures. Waheed, who held office from February 2012 to November 2013 following Mohamed Nasheed’s controversial resignation, reportedly sought Epstein’s guidance on financial and political matters.

Financial Consultations During Economic Strain

Documents indicate that Waheed corresponded with Epstein regarding significant financial issues. A July 2012 email shows Waheed requesting Epstein’s help in securing a $500 million loan for the Maldives, which was experiencing economic challenges at the time. The message concluded with the phrase, “Warm regards, Waheed,” fueling online discussions in the Maldives about the appropriateness of consulting a convicted individual on national financial matters.

Further communications reveal Waheed seeking Epstein’s input on a suspicious $4 billion anonymous deposit proposal in late 2014. Emails show Waheed asking for advice, expressing unease over the transaction, with Epstein cautioning against potential fraud. Another similar inquiry emerged in January 2013 regarding a separate dubious investment offer.

Political Strategy and Campaign Guidance

Beyond finances, Waheed reportedly sought Epstein’s guidance on political strategy. During his 2013 presidential campaign, which he ultimately lost, emails show Waheed asking for advice on building his team and managing negative international media coverage related to human rights. One message reportedly read, “You are my saviour. I will do exactly what you said.”

Epstein, in turn, congratulated Waheed on assuming office in February 2012, remarking that he was “thrilled that the Maldives are now in your hands.”

Personal Meetings and Networking

The documents also detail personal encounters between the two. Waheed’s September 2012 itinerary for the UN General Assembly included a “private dinner” with Epstein in New York. Emails confirm at least two meetings at Epstein’s residence, which were attended by Waheed’s wife, Ilham. Discussions covered introductions to figures such as Norwegian politician Thorbjørn Jagland and Dubai businessman Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem, as well as personal details like dietary preferences.

Even after leaving office, Waheed continued to seek Epstein’s support. In 2015, he requested help publishing a book about his presidency and pitched investment opportunities in Maldivian islands, including developing Fuggiri for ultra-wealthy tourists and promoting Innareha for tourism. Project proposals ranged from $25 million to $400 million, targeting investors from the Middle East and Russia.

Latest File Releases Add More Details

The most recent tranche of over 3 million files, released in early 2026 by the U.S. Department of Justice, adds further context. These include profit projections for island developments, communications with Rothschild family members, job placement requests at Maldivian resorts, and discussions involving Saudi Prince Mohammed bin Salman about resort security. A lighter note in the documents shows Waheed mistakenly texting Epstein for his Facebook password.

The files also provide insight into Waheed’s views on his predecessor, Nasheed, and political ideology. Despite public speculation, no evidence links Waheed to Epstein’s criminal activities, and no legal charges have been filed against him.

Public Reaction and Current Role

Maldivian media have reported extensively on Waheed’s correspondence with Epstein, emphasizing both government and personal aspects of their relationship. Public reaction on social media platforms has been mixed, with some labeling Waheed a “traitor” and others minimizing the significance.

Today, Waheed serves as Special Envoy of the President under Mohamed Muizzu, a role he has held since May 26, 2025. In this unpaid position, he represents Maldives diplomatically, promotes economic opportunities, and strengthens international ties. Recent appearances include the Global Tourism Forum in Brussels in October 2025 and the Maldives Tourism and Investment Forum in New York in June 2025.

Epstein’s Far-Reaching Influence

The ongoing release of Epstein’s files underscores the vast reach of his influence, extending even to remote nations like the Maldives. Waheed has not publicly commented on the documents, and the Maldivian government has yet to issue an official response. As more files become available, they are expected to continue revealing the global scope of Epstein’s network.
