New Elevators Now Operational in Second Hiyaa Tower

The Housing Development Corporation (HDC) has officially confirmed the launch of new elevator systems in the second tower of the Hiyaa housing flats. The elevators became operational last Sunday, marking a major milestone in the government’s commitment to improving public housing infrastructure.

Part of a Larger Modernization Initiative

This is the first in a series of elevator installations planned across the 16 Hiyaa towers, part of a broader infrastructure upgrade spearheaded by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu. The project aims to address long-standing issues related to accessibility and elevator congestion within the high-rise housing complex.

Each tower will receive two additional elevators, bringing much-needed relief to thousands of residents who have faced delays and overcrowding for years.

Designed for Safety and Capacity

The newly installed elevators are equipped to meet modern accessibility standards. They are spacious enough to accommodate stretchers and can carry up to 21 people at a time—an essential feature in emergency scenarios and day-to-day convenience for families and individuals alike.

This significant capacity enhancement is expected to improve the quality of life for residents and reduce the strain on existing systems.

Installation Progress and Timeline

According to HDC, installation in towers 1, 3, and 4 is nearing completion, with testing already underway. The corporation aims to complete the installation of all 32 new elevators across the 16 towers by October of this year.

The elevator project began on April 18 of the previous year and is being implemented by Shenyang Yuanda Intellectual Industry Group Co., a company based in China. The total investment for the project stands at USD 18 million (MVR 278 million).

A Response to Long-Standing Concerns

The Hiyaa towers, each rising 25 storeys high, were originally constructed during the administration of former President Abdulla Yameen. They were initially fitted with only three or four elevators per tower. However, the growing population in these buildings led to frequent complaints about long wait times and insufficient elevator capacity.

Addressing this issue was one of President Muizzu’s central campaign promises—a pledge that now sees real progress.

The elevator upgrade is more than a structural improvement—it is a transformation in the daily experience of Hiyaa residents. Faster access, improved safety, and reduced congestion are expected outcomes that will directly benefit families, the elderly, and individuals with limited mobility.
