7% of Maldives Population Affected by Disabilities, Ministry Reports

A new report from the Ministry of Social and Family Development reveals that approximately seven percent of the Maldives’ population are persons with disabilities. This statistic, shared today on the 'Sarukaaru' website, underscores the significant presence of individuals within the community who require special protections and care.
A Growing Concern for Inclusion and Equal Opportunities
According to the National Social Protection Agency (NSPA), as of April, 14,188 people are officially registered as persons with disabilities in the country. While this number represents a growing awareness and acknowledgment of the community's needs, the ministry raised concerns about the continued social exclusion many individuals with disabilities face.
In some areas, persons with disabilities are still marginalized, limiting their ability to engage fully in community life and develop alongside others. This exclusion is not only an emotional and social setback but also a barrier to progress, preventing these individuals from contributing meaningfully to society.
A Call for Action: Promoting Inclusion and Providing Opportunities
In light of these findings, the Ministry of Social and Family Development is calling for greater efforts toward inclusion. They have stressed the need for more employment opportunities specifically tailored to persons with disabilities, ensuring they have access to the same rights and opportunities as their peers.
The ministry also emphasized the importance of raising public awareness about the challenges faced by persons with disabilities. Through more awareness programs, the public can better understand these challenges, fostering a culture of inclusion and reducing stigma.
Moving Toward a More Inclusive Maldives
This latest report highlights the crucial need for a shift in both attitude and action. By creating a more inclusive society that supports persons with disabilities, the Maldives can ensure that all its citizens have the opportunity to thrive and contribute to their communities.
As the conversation around disability inclusion grows, the government, along with civil society, will play an essential role in implementing effective solutions to integrate persons with disabilities into the broader fabric of Maldivian life.
