Tragic Road Accident in Male’ Claims Life of 17-Year-Old, Two Others Critically Injured

A tragic road accident in Male’ on Sunday night has left one teenager dead and two others fighting for their lives. The fatal incident took place in front of the Maafannu Bus Terminal on Boduthakurufaanu Magu, a stretch often crowded with pedestrians and traffic.

According to police, a speeding motorcycle struck a jogger who was crossing the road using a zebra crossing. The motorcycle then crashed into a passing pickup truck, leaving a trail of destruction and three people seriously injured.

The young boy who lost his life in the accident has been identified as 17-year-old Alson Mohamed, the only son of well-known Maldivian music artists Mariyam Ashfa and Mohamed Abdul Ghani, popularly known as Theyrava.

Alson was riding the motorcycle with another 16-year-old boy at the time of the accident. Both teens were underage and not legally eligible to operate a motorcycle, according to authorities. Police confirmed that the collision happened around 8 PM.

Alson died shortly after sustaining multiple injuries. His 16-year-old companion remains in critical condition and is currently receiving emergency treatment at Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH). The jogger, a 40-year-old man, is also being treated in the hospital’s intensive care unit.

Footage of the accident quickly began circulating across social media platforms, drawing widespread attention and concern. Videos show the scene soaked in blood, with a damaged pickup truck halted at the site. Fragments of the motorcycle and a shattered helmet lay scattered across the road.

While the images have shocked many, they have also renewed public concern over road safety, especially with the frequent use of motorcycles by underage riders in Male’.

Authorities have launched a formal investigation into the accident. At this stage, no arrests have been made, but police are collecting witness statements and analyzing CCTV footage from the area.

Traffic incidents involving young, unlicensed riders have become alarmingly common in recent years. Many are now calling for stricter enforcement of traffic laws and better education on road safety for both motorists and pedestrians.
