Shock in Maalhos as 65-Year-Old Fisherman Killed in His Sleep
A peaceful island community in Alif Alif Atoll was shaken in the early hours of today after the tragic death of 65-year-old AbduRahman Adam, a longtime resident and fisherman from AA. Maalhos. He was found severely injured in his home after what appears to have been a violent assault while he slept. Despite efforts to save him, AbduRahman passed away while being treated at the island’s health centre.
Discovered by His Wife in Critical Condition
The incident occurred around 2am. According to residents, AbduRahman’s wife discovered him in a severely wounded state and rushed to alert the local health centre. She works as an assistant at the island council and had been home at the time of the attack. The couple lived alone, with their two children residing in the capital city, Male’.
Witnesses say that AbduRahman had suffered serious head trauma, including multiple injuries to his skull. His eyes were reportedly swollen shut, suggesting he was struck repeatedly with great force. There are unconfirmed reports that his throat may have been wounded with a sharp object.
A resident described the scene as horrifying and said they believe the injuries may have been caused by a blunt object, possibly a metal rod or wooden plank.
A Community in Shock
AA. Maalhos is home to roughly 400 residents and is not known for violent crime. The news of the assault and death has deeply unsettled the island’s close-knit community.
“Something this evil has never happened on this island before,” a local resident said, expressing both grief and disbelief. “We’re all in shock. There’s no one here we can even imagine doing something like this.”
The fact that AbduRahman was attacked while sleeping has only added to the fear and sorrow felt by those who knew him. Described as a quiet, hardworking man, he spent most of his life fishing for yellowfin tuna — a familiar and respected figure in the island’s daily life.
Police Launch Investigation
Maldives Police Service confirmed receiving a report of the incident at approximately 1:50am. A police media official stated that a team of investigators has already been dispatched to Maalhos to gather evidence and speak with witnesses. Authorities have begun monitoring movement in and out of the island as part of the investigation.
So far, no arrests have been made, and the motive behind the attack remains unknown. The police have not released official details about the nature of the injuries or possible suspects.
A Peaceful Island Faces an Unfamiliar Horror
In a community where such violent events are rare to nonexistent, AbduRahman's death has left an unsettling void. For residents of Maalhos, this incident is not just a crime — it’s a painful reminder of vulnerability and a deep loss of a familiar face in a place where everyone knows each other.
As investigations continue, many on the island are holding onto hope that answers will come soon, and justice will be served for the man they called a neighbor, friend, and father.
Police urge anyone with information to come forward to assist in the ongoing investigation.
