Maldives Gears Up for Eid Al-Adha with Nationwide Lighting and Celebrations

As the Maldives prepares to welcome Eid Al-Adha, the Ministry of Cities, Local Government, and Public Works has teamed up with local island councils to bring a radiant touch to 65 islands across the nation. This year, colorful lights and decorative arches will illuminate communities, spreading joy and festivity well beyond the capital.

A Growing Tradition Rooted in Male’

The custom of lighting up Male’, Hulhumale’, and Vilimale’ with vibrant lights and ornate arches started during President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s time as Mayor of Male’ City. What began as a city initiative has blossomed into a nationwide tradition that captures the spirit of Eid celebrations throughout the Maldives.

Minister Adam Shareef shared with Mihaaru News that all islands that were decorated during Eid al-Fitr will once again bask in festive illumination this Eid. The lighting installations have already kicked off in the capital region—Male’, Hulhumale’, and Vilimale’—with teams from city councils and the ministry working diligently to prepare.

Preparing for a Festive Season Across the Islands

Last year, major landmarks like Republic Square and Hulhumale’ Central Park dazzled with bright lights, colorful arches, and lively decorations. The capital is set to recreate this vibrant atmosphere, with public festivities planned to match the scale of previous years. Events like the popular color festival, Koadi Nerun, Maali parade, Eid shows, and spectacular fireworks displays will once again be highlights of the celebration.

National Eid Celebrations Spread Across Three Islands

This year, the government has officially chosen three islands to host national Eid celebrations, making the festivities accessible to a wider audience. The islands selected are Kelaa in Haa Alifu Atoll, Guraidhoo in Kaafu Atoll, and Gan in Laamu Atoll. These locations will showcase special events, bringing communities together to share in the joy of Eid.

Lighting Up the Nation, One Island at a Time

The expanding tradition of lighting up islands for Eid speaks to the Maldives’ vibrant culture and close-knit communities. From the heart of the capital to remote islands, the festive glow symbolizes unity, hope, and the shared spirit of celebration that Eid Al-Adha inspires.

As the lights go up and the islands prepare to celebrate, the Maldives shines not just with decoration, but with the warmth of its people embracing this meaningful festival.
