Maldives Government Expands Healthcare Network with New Facilities in 18 Islands

In a strategic push to enhance healthcare accessibility across the Maldives, the government has officially contracted the construction and expansion of hospitals and health centres in 18 additional islands. This move is part of the administration’s broader initiative to upgrade health services in 90 islands by the end of 2025.

The latest agreements were formalized during a signing ceremony hosted by the Ministry of Health. Contracts were awarded to three major state-owned corporations: Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC), Fenaka Corporation, and the Road Development Corporation (RDC).

Government's Ongoing Commitment to Island Healthcare

As of April 2025, the government has already initiated contracts for:

  • 19 new hospitals

  • 15 health centres

  • 21 facility expansion projects

This latest phase adds significant momentum to the nationwide plan to bring equitable and improved health services to all corners of the country, especially the outer atolls where access to healthcare remains limited.

Projects Assigned to Road Development Corporation (RDC)

RDC has been contracted to undertake four key projects:

  • Construction of a new hospital in R. Meedhoo

  • Construction of a new hospital in GA. Dhaandhoo

  • Expansion of the health centre in HA. Filladhoo

  • Expansion of the health centre in M. Mulah

These agreements were signed by State Minister for Health Ahmed Gasim and RDC Deputy Managing Director Mohamed Asbah Ali Naseer.

MTCC to Deliver Healthcare Projects on Five Islands

Maldives Transport and Contracting Company will lead the construction and expansion of facilities in five locations:

Fenaka Corporation Takes the Lead on Nine Island Projects

These contracts were signed by Minister of State for Health Ismail Shareef and Fenaka Deputy Managing Director Mohamed Arif.

Long-Term Vision for Sustainable Health Infrastructure

This phase of development not only promises to bring better medical services to remote islands but also creates employment opportunities and supports the decentralization of healthcare. By investing in modern, well-equipped facilities, the government is laying the foundation for a more resilient and inclusive healthcare system.

As the construction progresses, the Ministry of Health is expected to provide regular updates on project timelines, employment generation, and future phases of its national healthcare upgrade program.

This large-scale expansion reinforces the Maldives' commitment to achieving universal health coverage and improving living standards for island communities. With continued investment and transparent execution, these projects could set new standards for rural health access in the region.
