Maldives Police have arrested a 36-year-old man and a 25-year-old woman after a video of them allegedly performing a sexual act on the balcony of a Hiyaa flat in Hulhumale' spread rapidly across social media.
The incident took place on a balcony of Hiyaa Tower 12. Neighbors in surrounding buildings could clearly see what was happening, and the footage that later circulated online left little room for doubt about how public the moment had become.
Police launched an investigation once the video gained traction online. Last night they confirmed the pair had been taken into custody. When the two appeared in court, magistrates ordered them held on remand for five days while the case continues.
Public indecency remains an offence under Maldivian law. In a densely packed residential area like the Hiyaa complex, where balconies face multiple towers, the lack of privacy turned a private act into a very public spectacle.
The video's quick spread online raised familiar questions about how easily personal moments can become community property these days. Residents in the area have expressed discomfort that such scenes were visible to anyone who happened to look across from neighbouring blocks.
Police have not released further details about the investigation at this stage.
