President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has received the Progressive Party of the Maldives' official nomination to run for a second term in the 2028 presidential election.
The ruling Progressive National Congress handed him the ticket during the closing session of its congress on Thursday night. Party chairperson and Speaker of Parliament Abdul Raheem Abdulla presented the nomination at the Social Centre.
Unanimous Vote Clears the Way
The decision came through a resolution approved during a special session of the party's congress. Special delegate Abdulla Ibrahim from the Fuvahmulah South Constituency submitted the proposal. All 1,119 members present voted in favor.
Newly elected members of the PNC leadership also passed the same resolution without opposition later the same day.
According to the text of the resolution, a second term would avoid any interruption to the work currently being carried out under President Muizzu. It further claimed that both party members and the wider public support this move.
Party Rules Skip the Primary
Under Article 88, Clause (b) of the PNC's internal regulations, a sitting president who seeks a second term receives the party ticket automatically. No primary contest is required.
The congress itself ran from Tuesday through Thursday. By the time the final session wrapped up, the path for Muizzu's re-election bid had been formally cleared more than two years before voters go to the polls.
Whether the smooth internal process reflects genuine broad support or simply the advantages of incumbency will be tested when the actual campaign begins.
