The government has officially handed over a plot of land in Hulhumalé Phase 2 to the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) to support the expansion of its operations.
The 13,574-square-foot site will house the NDMA’s main headquarters, an emergency operations centre, a warehouse for storing disaster relief materials, and a facility that can provide temporary shelter for people affected by disasters, according to the authority.
NDMA stated that the new land will help further strengthen disaster response efforts and increase its capacity to serve the public several times over.
The NDMA office was first established following the 2024 tsunami disaster. It currently operates from offices at the Rihijehi Koshi in Malé. Before that, the agency lacked a permanent base and worked out of various schools in Malé, the Social Centre, Dharubaaruge, and the Civil Service Commission building.
The World Bank has also arranged funds for establishing a disaster emergency operations centre as part of the new facilities.
