The Ministry of Health, Family and Welfare has held a meeting to gather children’s opinions and suggestions on planned amendments to the Child Rights Protection Act.
The ministry organised the session to hear directly from young people about changes needed to make the law stronger and more effective in protecting children’s rights. Officials described the meeting as an opportunity for children to speak openly in a safe environment about the Act’s current provisions, the challenges they face, and extra measures that could better safeguard their rights and responsibilities.
Students from schools in Malé as well as several island schools took part in the discussions. Participants examined different articles of the existing law and shared their thoughts on how protections could be improved.
According to the ministry, the aim of such consultations is to give children a genuine voice in shaping the policies and laws that affect them. The views collected will help ensure that any future amendments prioritise children’s best interests and carry greater weight when changes are proposed.
