Operators running food court units near Malé’s southwestern harbor have received notices telling them to leave the premises.
The State Trading Organization, which manages the units, has instructed tenants to vacate and hand the spaces back within 90 days of receiving the notice. Some café owners said they were given three months, though it remains unclear whether every operator received the exact same timeline.
What Happens to the Site Next
Authorities expect the area to support commercial harbor-related activities once the main commercial harbor moves to Thilafushi. No formal public statement has yet spelled out the precise plans for the land.
With the Thilamalé Bridge set to open, officials have indicated that certain harbor facilities could eventually take shape on the current food court site.
A Quick Look Back
The harbor food court opened on 23 July 2018 after a MVR 30 million development project. It contains 26 units in three sizes: 960, 1,260 and 1,660 square feet.
Before the modern facility arrived, the same stretch of shoreline hosted a cluster of cafés operating in conditions many considered far from ideal. The new food court was meant to tidy things up. Now those same units face an uncertain future as the harbor shifts location.
For the operators, the 90-day clock is already ticking. What replaces the food stalls and coffee counters remains to be seen.
