New Velana Airport Terminal to Open on Independence Day

New Velana Airport Terminal to Open on Independence Day

Velana International Airport is preparing to unveil its long-awaited new passenger terminal on July 26, coinciding with the 60th anniversary of the Maldives’ independence. The opening is set to be a turning point for both the airport and the nation’s tourism industry.

A New Era for Maldives Aviation

Speaking at the Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) Annual General Meeting, Managing Director Ibrahim Shareef Mohamed announced that the new terminal’s launch will not only elevate the quality of services at the country’s primary international gateway but also lead to a substantial boost in revenue.

“This terminal marks a transformative chapter for the Maldives,” Shareef said. “It will significantly scale up our operations and strengthen our position in the global travel market.”

Record-Breaking Profits Ahead of Expansion

The announcement comes on the heels of MACL’s most successful financial year to date. In 2023, the company reported a net profit of MVR 1.1 billion—a 32 percent increase over the previous year. This growth was achieved despite a hefty MVR 7.2 billion in recurrent expenses, demonstrating the resilience and efficiency of the organization.

Shareef credited the entire MACL team for this achievement, emphasizing the collaborative effort behind the company’s performance. “We’re confident that with continued teamwork and strategic planning, this momentum will carry us even further,” he added.

Terminal Project: Eight Years in the Making

The construction of the new terminal began in 2016 under a contract awarded to the Saudi Binladin Group. The project, which has seen several changes in scope and budget over the years, is now nearing completion thanks to renewed focus from the current administration. Additional funding was secured in partnership with the Saudi Fund for Development.

Once operational, the new terminal will cover 78,000 square meters and increase Velana International Airport’s passenger handling capacity to 7.5 million annually. The total investment in the project now stands at approximately USD 600 million (MVR 9.2 billion).

Eyes on July 26: A Symbolic Launch

The opening date has been carefully selected to align with Independence Day, making it a symbolic and proud moment for the country. MACL staff are now focused on ensuring everything is in place for a smooth and successful launch.

“We’re not just opening a building; we’re opening the doors to the future of Maldivian aviation and tourism,” Shareef said.

Optimism from the New Leadership

MACL’s new Chairperson, Aishath Nurain Janah, also spoke during the AGM, highlighting the significance of the company’s accomplishments and expressing confidence in its strategic direction.

“Last year’s results represent a major leap forward,” she said. “We are well-positioned to take MACL—and Maldives aviation as a whole—to new heights in the years ahead.”

With rising tourist arrivals and growing international attention, the opening of the new terminal is expected to further enhance the Maldives’ reputation as a world-class destination and hub for air travel in the Indian Ocean.
