Smart Meter Installation Across STELCO Network to Be Completed by September
STELCO Managing Director Hussain Fahumee has announced that the company will complete the full transition to smart electricity meters across all service areas by the end of September. The move is part of a broader effort to modernize utility services and improve energy efficiency for customers across the Maldives.
STELCO currently provides electricity to 35 islands, with smart meters already operational at the Hiyaa Towers in Hulhumale'. The new meters are part of a nationwide upgrade first announced last August, with the goal of completing installation within a three-year timeframe. However, recent updates suggest the transition is progressing faster than initially anticipated.
Final Phase Underway Ahead of September Deadline
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Fahumee confirmed that preparations are now in the final stages, particularly in relation to launching a new mobile application designed to work with the smart meters already in place at Hiyaa Towers. He stated that all existing meters across STELCO's service areas will be replaced with smart meters by September.
“With the smart meter and the accompanying smart application, customers will be able to view real-time information about their electricity usage,” Fahumee said. “They’ll have access to hourly, daily, and weekly usage data, helping them manage their electricity consumption more effectively.”
A Smarter Way to Manage Electricity
One of the standout benefits of the new system is its potential to help customers track and reduce their energy usage. By having access to detailed consumption data, users can make more informed choices about their electricity habits, which may lead to lower monthly bills.
The upcoming STELCO smart meter app will also feature integrated services that make bill management easier. Customers will be able to view and pay multiple bills through the platform, and access customer service support through the existing STELCO Care service.
Improving Transparency and Efficiency
The nationwide rollout of smart meters marks a significant milestone in STELCO's efforts to provide more transparent and efficient utility services. As households and businesses gain access to real-time data, the company anticipates a shift in consumption habits that supports broader sustainability goals.
Fahumee reiterated the company’s commitment to improving customer experience through innovation and digital transformation. With the final phase of smart meter installation now in motion, STELCO is on track to meet its September target, bringing the benefits of smarter energy management to every island it serves.
