Maldives Ports Limited Takes Over Fish Market Docking Zone, Announces Vessel Fee Policy
Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) has officially taken over management of the remaining section of North Harbour, which now includes the area in front of the Male’ fish market. With this transfer finalized by the Transport Ministry, MPL announced that starting September 1, vessels docking at the newly incorporated zone will be subject to docking fees.
What the Expansion Means for Vessel Operators
Previously, MPL managed the North Harbour area stretching from the MPL port itself to the northern sections of the harbour. Now, with the addition of the fish market zone, oversight responsibility has shifted from the Male’ City Council to MPL.
Last month, MPL called for all vessels using this area to complete registration. From yesterday onwards, only registered vessels will be permitted to receive services at the expanded North Harbour zone. Come September, those vessels will be charged fees according to the tariffs and policies currently in place at North Harbour.
An MPL media spokesperson confirmed that fees at the fish market area will match the existing charges applied elsewhere within North Harbour.
Fishing Vessels Exempt from Fees
MPL has made it clear that fishing vessels will not be required to pay docking fees despite the jurisdiction change. This exemption applies solely to fishing boats; all other vessels docking in the fish market zone will fall under the new fee structure.
Assistant General Manager Ahmed Hamdulla Rasheed explained that MPL is still organizing the new area but expects to complete these arrangements shortly.
“We are finalizing the setup in front of the fish market and expect to have it fully organized by tomorrow,” Hamdulla said.
He added that vessels currently being used as housing for expatriates will be cleared out, and the area will be reserved exclusively for fishing boats. Supply boats carrying goods will also not be allowed to dock there.
More Space and Better Organization for Male’s Harbour
With this expansion, the total docking capacity at North Harbour will increase to accommodate 54 vessels. Out of these, 20 slots are set aside specifically for fishing vessels, ensuring they have reserved space in this busy area.
This change represents a step toward better management of Male’s harbour facilities, aiming to streamline operations and provide clear guidelines for vessel owners and operators.
