President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has revealed plans to develop one island in each atoll as a dedicated picnic destination for residents and local tourists.
Speaking during his visit to AA. Mathiveri, the President said he has received numerous requests from residents seeking safe and accessible places for family outings. Many communities currently lack nearby islands suitable for picnics, making family recreation challenging.
"Residents do not have anywhere to go on picnic with their families. There is also nowhere to take tourists. So the government will develop one island from each atoll as a picnic island," President Muizzu said. He added that research is already underway, and practical work on the project will begin soon.
The initiative is expected to benefit both residents and the tourism sector. By establishing picnic islands, guests staying at local guesthouses will also gain access to safe and well-maintained spots for leisure. The President highlighted that the islands would provide an opportunity for people to enjoy the natural beauty of the Maldives in a family-friendly environment.
Research for identifying suitable islands and planning infrastructure is currently ongoing. The government aims to ensure these islands are accessible, sustainable, and equipped with basic facilities to make day trips enjoyable.
Residents across the Maldives often face challenges when trying to find nearby islands for recreation. With limited transport options and the need for safe, organized spaces, family outings can be complicated. By developing a picnic island in every atoll, the government hopes to make leisure activities more accessible while supporting community engagement and tourism growth.
President Muizzu assured residents that the project will move forward soon, providing more options for recreation and creating memorable experiences for both locals and visitors.
