MVR 144 Million Boduthakurufaanu Magu Road Expansion Kicks Off in Male

Construction has officially started on the Boduthakurufaanu Magu road development project, a major initiative aimed at improving traffic flow in Male’. The project involves laying asphalt from the Presidential Jetty to the market area and widening the road to four lanes.

The project, valued at MVR 144 million, was inaugurated today by Minister of Construction Dr. Abdullah Muththalib and has been contracted to the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC). Work is scheduled to be completed within 455 days.

Speaking at the inauguration, Minister Muththalib highlighted the growing traffic congestion in Male’ due to the increasing number of vehicles. He explained that the project is an important step to ease travel difficulties along one of the city’s busiest routes.

To minimize disruption for the public, construction will be carried out in segments. "With this project, we hope to ease the difficulties faced by vehicles traveling to and from the Presidential Jetty and the market area," said Minister Muththalib. "Once the remaining segments are completed, it will provide a major improvement to traffic flow along this key road."

Minister Muththalib also announced that the Chinese government will support the development of all roads in Male’ under a free aid agreement. The search for a contractor to carry out technical design work is already underway in China.

He emphasized that the overall development of Male City’s roads is a critical part of the government’s effort to make the capital a more livable and comfortable city for residents.

In addition to the Boduthakurufaanu Magu project, the minister revealed that redevelopment work at Republic Square will begin soon, while Sultan Park is already being upgraded. Preparations are also underway to further improve the Rasfannu area, bringing a series of improvements to the city’s public spaces.

Minister Muththalib acknowledged that construction will inevitably cause some inconvenience. He called on residents and visitors to cooperate with the work as the government addresses long-standing traffic issues. "It is difficult to start a project without causing some disruption, which is why careful planning is so important," he said.

To allow the expansion to proceed, Boduthakurufaanu Magu will be closed until October 13. The nearby lagoon area will also remain closed for the duration of the construction.

As part of the project, MTCC will install a new drainage system, pavements, road markings, and traffic signboards to improve safety and efficiency. These improvements are expected to benefit both commuters and pedestrians once the project is completed.

The Boduthakurufaanu Magu road expansion marks one of the largest infrastructure projects currently underway in Male’. It is part of a broader effort to improve transportation, public spaces, and the overall quality of life for residents in the capital.
