Government Awards National Development Plan to Nexia Maldives for MVR 17.9 Million

The Ministry of Finance and Planning has confirmed that Nexia Maldives has been contracted to draft the government’s 20-year National Development Plan for MVR 17.9 million. The project, considered one of the most significant undertakings for the country’s future, is expected to guide development priorities across the Maldives for the next two decades.

Bidding Process and Award

According to procurement details published on the ministry’s website, three companies submitted bids for the project: Nexia Maldives, Riyan Pvt Ltd, and CDE Pvt Ltd. Nexia received the highest technical score among the applicants, leading to the awarding of the contract.

The agreement was finalized on June 25, with the project expected to be completed within 12 months.

Nationwide Consultations Underway

Work on the plan has already begun. Nexia Maldives has started conducting consultations on all inhabited islands to gather input from communities. The aim is to complete these visits before the end of the year, ensuring that the plan reflects perspectives from across the nation.

At a press briefing held yesterday, Mohamed Nafeez, the project lead for the National Development Plan, stated that the finalized plan will be launched toward the end of January next year. He noted that public input will be collected through various channels, including in-person meetings and online platforms, in the months ahead.

A Presidential Pledge

The creation of a long-term development plan was among President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s key campaign promises. The president has also pledged to introduce legal changes that will give the plan formal status in law.

Once the plan is in place, a dedicated monitoring framework, financial strategy, and implementation structure will be established to ensure progress is tracked and commitments are met.

With public consultations underway and the launch date set for early next year, the 20-year National Development Plan is expected to become a central tool for shaping Maldives’ social, economic, and environmental policies. For citizens, it represents a rare opportunity to have their voices included in long-term decision-making that could shape the future of every island community.
