Polling stations across Addu City concluded voting for the much-anticipated referendum on whether its districts should form separate councils. As of 4 p.m., officials had closed queues, allowing only those already in line to cast their votes before ballot boxes were sealed. Counting began roughly 30 minutes after each box was closed.
Elections Commission Vice Chief Abdul Rahman Salah Rasheed told Raajje TV that he expected voter turnout to surpass 50 percent. However, he clarified that the exact figure would only be confirmed once the final results were announced. Provisional tallies, he added, were expected within an hour to an hour and a half after counting began.
Preliminary results from the Feydhoo constituency showed a clear majority opting against forming a separate local council. At the ballot box located at Kalaafaanu School in Malé, only 39 residents voted in favor, while 146 voted against.
With all boxes from Feydhoo now counted, the final tally confirmed 372 votes supporting a separate council and 1,015 opposing it, a decisive outcome that keeps Feydhoo under the administration of the Addu City Council. The result marks a notable shift from past sentiments, showing that most residents now favor unity over autonomy.
Meanwhile, residents of Hulhudhoo and Meedhoo have expressed a contrasting view. According to results released so far, Hulhudhoo recorded 351 votes in favor of forming a new council, with only 151 against. Early reports from Meedhoo also indicate a majority leaning toward separation, continuing a long-standing call for more localized governance.
This divide in opinion highlights differing community perspectives within Addu, with some areas seeking greater administrative independence while others value the benefits of a united city council.
The current referendum has drawn comparisons to the one held fifteen years ago, on October 9, 2010. Back then, both Meedhoo and Feydhoo residents opposed being placed under the same city council, while Hulhudhoo voted in favor of forming one.
In a remarkable twist, Feydhoo’s stance has now shifted. By choosing to remain under the Addu City Council in 2025, Feydhoo has reversed its earlier position, signaling a significant change in local priorities and perhaps a renewed trust in collective governance.

މި ނަތީޖާއަކީ ތާރީޚީ ރިފަރެންޑަމެއްގައި ނެރުނު މުހިންމު ނިންމުމެކެވެ. މީގެ 15 އަހަރު ކުރިން، 9 އޮކްޓޫބަރު 2010 ގައި ސިޓީ ކައުންސިލް އުފެއްދުމަށް ނެގުނު ވޯޓުގައި މީދޫ އާއި ފޭދޫގެ ރައްޔިތުން އޭރު ވޯޓުލާފައިވަނީ ސިޓީ ކައުންސިލް އުފެއްދުމާ ދެކޮޅަށެވެ. އެދުވަހު ސިޓީ ކައުންސިލް އުފެއްދުމަށް ތާއީދުކުރީ ހަމައެކަނި ހުޅުދޫ ރައްޔިތުންނެވެ.
ނަމަވެސް މިއަދުގެ ވޯޓުގައި ފޭދޫ ރައްޔިތުން ވަނީ އައްޑޫ ސިޓީ ކައުންސިލްގެ ދަށުގައި ބަހައްޓަން ވޯޓުދީފައެވެ. މިއީ 15 އަހަރު ކުރިން އެރަށުގެ ރައްޔިތުން ނިންމި ނިންމުމާ ވަރަށް ބޮޑު ތަފާތުކަމެއް ދައްކުވައިދޭ ސިޔާސީ ގޮތުން މުހިންމު ނިންމުމެއް ކަމަށް ބެލެވެއެވެ.
