Authorities have confiscated the phone of Fathimath Zahiyya, popularly known as Zaya, a National Assembly member representing the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), after she posted a threat directed at police officers on social media.
According to a Criminal Court order, the seizure aims to secure evidence related to the threat, which was shared on Facebook at 11:08 PM on Saturday.
In her post, Zaya, who serves as the MDP President for Hulhumale’ Uthuru district, tagged the police and mentioned the preparation of "Kandoodhoo pepper"—a local variety of hot pepper spray—for use on the 17th of next month. She concluded the post with the phrase: “Just hit, hit.”
The post referenced the opposition party’s planned protest, following an earlier demonstration in Malé City that was disrupted by police.
Authorities had previously intervened during the last MDP demonstration, employing sonic weapons and pepper spray to disperse the crowd. The party’s decision to organize another protest comes in response to the police’s crackdown, fueling tensions between the opposition and law enforcement.

ކްރިމިނަލް ކޯޓުގެ އަމުރެއްގެ ދަށުން މި ފޯނު ހިފަހައްޓާފައިވަނީ، މީސް މީޑިއާގައި ޒަޔާ ފުލުހުންނަށް ދިން އިންޒާރާ ގުޅޭ ހެކި ހޯދުމަށް ކަމަށް ފުލުހުން ބުނެއެވެ. ޒަޔާ އެ އިންޒާރު ފޭސްބުކްގައި ޕޯސްޓުކޮށްފައިވަނީ ހޮނިހިރު ދުވަހުގެ ރޭ 11:08 ގައެވެ.
އެމްޑީޕީގެ ހުޅުމާލެ އުތުރު ދާއިރާގެ ރައީސް ކަން ވެސް ކުރައްވާ ޒަޔާ، އެރޭ ޕޯސްޓުކުރެއްވިއިރު ފުލުހުން ޓެގް ކުރައްވާފައި ވެއެވެ. އޭނާ ވިދާޅުވެފައިވަނީ، އަންނަ މަހުގެ 17 ވަނަ ދުވަހަށް އަމާޒުކޮށް ފުލުހުންގެ ބޭނުންކުރާ 'ކަނޑޫދޫ މިރުސް' ސްޕްރޭ ތައްޔާރުކުރެވިފައިވާ ކަމަށެވެ.
މި އިންޒާރު އޭނާ ދެއްވާފައިވަނީ، މިދިޔަ ހުކުރު ދުވަހު މާލޭގައި އެމްޑީޕީން ކުރި މުޒާހަރާ ފުލުހުން ސޮނިކް ވެޕަންސް އާއި ޕެޕަރ ސްޕްރޭ ބޭނުންކޮށްގެން ރޫޅާލުމާ ގުޅިގެން، އިދިކޮޅު ޕާޓީން އިތުރު މުޒާހަރާއެއް ބާއްވަން ނިންމުމަށް ފަހުގައެވެ.
