Dr. Aminath Zahir Makes History as First Maldivian to Earn a PhD in Dhivehi Language

Dr. Aminath Zahir has made history by becoming the first person in the Maldives to receive a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Dhivehi Language. The groundbreaking achievement marks a major step forward in preserving and advancing the nation’s linguistic heritage.

Dr. Zahir completed her doctoral studies under the PhD program launched by the Maldives National University (MNU) in 2019. She received the prestigious degree during MNU’s graduation ceremony held yesterday, earning widespread recognition for her pioneering work in the field.

With this accomplishment, Dr. Zahir now stands as the most academically qualified Dhivehi Language scholar in the country. Her PhD thesis—entirely written in Dhivehi—has been donated to the MNU Library, symbolizing a contribution not only to academia but also to national pride and identity.

Dr. Zahir’s academic journey began with a degree in Dhivehi Language, which she completed in 2009. She went on to earn a Master’s degree in Language and Culture before joining MNU’s Faculty of Arts as a Senior Lecturer, where she continues to inspire the next generation of language enthusiasts.

Minister of Dhivehi Language, Culture and Heritage, Adam Naseer Ibrahim, praised Dr. Zahir’s achievement as a landmark moment for the Maldivian language and culture. He emphasized that accomplishments like hers reinforce the value of Dhivehi and encourage continued research and appreciation of the country’s linguistic roots.

“The awarding of a PhD in Dhivehi is not just an academic milestone—it’s a cultural triumph,” Minister Adam Naseer noted. “It reflects our commitment to nurturing and preserving the essence of our national identity.”

MNU Vice Chancellor, Dr. Aishath Shehenaz, also lauded Dr. Zahir’s achievement, calling it an honor for both the university and the nation. She highlighted the significance of the milestone in promoting academic excellence and cultural pride, expressing hope that it will inspire more scholars to pursue advanced research in Dhivehi.

“This is a proud moment for MNU and for every Maldivian who values the richness of our language,” Dr. Shehenaz said.

Dr. Zahir’s achievement is widely regarded as a turning point in the academic recognition of Dhivehi, underscoring the importance of preserving linguistic heritage in an ever-globalizing world.
