Former Football Association of Maldives (FAM) President Bassam Adeel Jaleel has been handed an additional five-year prison sentence after being found guilty of money laundering. The conviction follows his earlier sentence for embezzling USD 10,000 (MVR 154,000) from the association’s funds.
In addition to the prison term, the Criminal Court ordered Bassam to pay a fine of MVR 154,000, equivalent to the amount laundered. The fine must be settled within six months.
Second Conviction Linked to the Same Funds
Earlier in October, Bassam had already been sentenced to four years in prison for embezzling the funds in 2018 while serving as FAM President. According to court documents, the money originated from FIFA deposits made into FAM’s official account. Bassam reportedly submitted falsified documents to the bank and transferred the funds into his personal account, claiming it was for currency exchange purposes.
The latest conviction relates to his use of the embezzled funds, which prosecutors argued were used to pay rent for his Rehendhi flat, rather than exchanged as claimed.
Court Determines Funds Were “Proceeds of Crime”
Delivering the verdict, Judge Ismail Shafeeu stated that the evidence proved Bassam had diverted the money deposited into his personal account for his own benefit and to cover expenses for others. The court concluded that the funds were indeed proceeds of embezzlement, fulfilling the legal definition of money laundering under Maldivian law.
“The prosecution successfully demonstrated that the accused utilized the embezzled funds for personal expenditure,” the judgment read.
Sentencing and State Requests
During the sentencing phase, the state prosecution sought the maximum penalty of 15 years’ imprisonment and a USD 50,000 fine, while Bassam’s defense pleaded for leniency, citing his lack of prior criminal record.
After considering both sides, Judge Shafeeu imposed a five-year term and the monetary fine. However, the court denied the state’s request to recover the embezzled amount, ruling that such an order could not be made without proof that the funds remained in Bassam’s possession.
Bassam’s legal troubles are far from over. He continues to face additional embezzlement charges involving other FAM funds. In one of those ongoing cases, the prosecution has sought a recovery order for a penthouse allegedly purchased with misappropriated money.
The Criminal Court has yet to announce verdicts in these related cases, which could potentially lead to further penalties if Bassam is found guilty.

- ޖިނާއީ ކޯޓުގެ ޙުކުމް: ފަނޑިޔާރު އިސްމާޢީލް ޝަފީޢު އިއްވެވި ހުކުމްގައި ވިދާޅުވީ، ޑޮލަރަށް ބަދަލުކުރުމަށް ކަމަށް ބުނެ ބައްސާމްގެ އަމިއްލަ އެކައުންޓަށް ޖަމާކުރި ފައިސާ އޭނާ އަމިއްލަ ކަންކަމަށް ބޭނުންކޮށްފައިވާ ކަން ކޯޓަށް ސާބިތުވެފައިވާ ކަމަށެވެ. މިއީ ޚިޔާނާތުގެ ކުށުން ލިބިފައިވާ ފައިސާކަން ސާބިތުވާ ކަމަށް ކޯޓުން ވަނީ ކަނޑައަޅާފައެވެ.
