Maldivian Futsal Heroes Return to Fireworks and Nationwide Celebrations

Cheers, fireworks, and national pride filled the air on Thursday night as the Maldivian national futsal team returned home after making history in South Asia. Fresh off their championship victory, the team was welcomed with celebrations at Velana International Airport, marking a memorable moment for Maldivian sports.

The Maldives clinched the inaugural SAFF Futsal Championship, winning every match in the tournament and lifting the trophy with a flawless record. Their return was met by Minister of Sports Abdulla Rafiu, Football Association of Maldives President Ahmed Thoriq (Tom), and Commissioner of Sports Mohamed Tholal, along with senior officials from the Sports Ministry and FAM.

Family members of the players were among the first to greet the champions, embracing them as they arrived with the trophy. Members of the local football community and well-wishers also gathered at the airport, turning the arrival into an emotional and festive occasion.

From there, the celebrations moved into the heart of the capital. The team boarded a bus and traveled to the Social Center, where a vehicle parade was organized in their honor. The parade made its way along Majeedhee Magu toward the Artificial Beach, drawing crowds along the route.

At various points, members of the public joined the procession, cheering, waving, and celebrating alongside the players. For many fans, it was a rare chance to share the moment up close with a national team that had just written a new chapter in Maldivian sports history.

By the time the parade reached the Artificial Beach, a large crowd had gathered, including families, futsal supporters, and members of the general public. A special stage had been set up for the occasion, complete with a red carpet.

Team captain Mohamed Imran (Inmi), joined by Minister Abdulla Rafiu and FAM President Ahmed Thoriq, formally hoisted the championship trophy on stage. The moment was met with loud applause and visible emotion from both players and supporters.

The Maldives National Defence Force followed the ceremony with a fireworks display, lighting up the night sky in celebration. Traditional boduberu performances and musical activities added to the festive atmosphere, blending sport and culture into one vibrant celebration. The event concluded with a public photo session, allowing fans to take pictures with the players and the trophy.

The SAFF Futsal Championship was held in Bangkok, Thailand, and the Maldives dominated the tournament from start to finish, finishing with a perfect 18 points.

The campaign began with a commanding 7–1 victory over Pakistan, followed by a 6–1 win against Bangladesh. The team then defeated India 5–0, edged Nepal 2–1, and overcame Bhutan 3–1. In their final match, the Maldives sealed the title with a 5–2 win against Sri Lanka.

In recognition of the historic achievement, the government has announced a MVR 1 million bonus for the team. The reward reflects the significance of the victory and the pride it has brought to the nation
