Two Maldivian Men Arrested in Alleged Drug Smuggling Plot at Velana International Airport

Two Maldivian nationals have been taken into police custody after allegedly attempting to collect luggage belonging to a Malaysian woman arrested on suspicion of drug trafficking at Velana International Airport.

The arrests come as part of an ongoing investigation into a suspected attempt to smuggle more than two kilograms of illegal drugs into the Maldives.

Malaysian Woman Detained With Over 2kg of Drugs

The case began when 38-year-old Malaysian national Ranjini Jeevananthan was stopped by authorities upon arrival in the country. During a routine inspection of her belongings, officers reportedly discovered a substantial quantity of drugs concealed inside her luggage.

Police confirmed that the seized substances weighed more than two kilograms. While investigators have not publicly disclosed the specific type of drugs involved, officials described the amount as significant.

Following her arrest, authorities launched further inquiries to determine whether the suspect was acting alone or as part of a wider network.

Operation to Identify Local Contacts

As part of the investigation, police conducted an operation aimed at identifying individuals who may have been planning to retrieve the luggage after the woman’s arrival.

According to information presented in court, two Maldivian men arrived at a guesthouse where the Malaysian woman had booked accommodation. Investigators believe they went there with the intention of collecting the drug-filled luggage.

The two men have been identified as 29-year-old Looth Ibrahim of GDh. Vaadhoo and 21-year-old Ahmed Rishmah of GA. Dhaandhoo.

Authorities stated that when the pair noticed police officers at the location, they attempted to leave the scene. Officers apprehended them shortly afterward.

Remand Periods Ordered by Court

The Criminal Court has ordered Ranjini Jeevananthan and Looth Ibrahim to remain in custody for 15 days as investigations continue. Ahmed Rishmah has been remanded for five days.

Court documents related to the remand hearings indicate that both Maldivian suspects declined to provide urine samples for testing after their arrest.

Police have not yet confirmed whether additional arrests are expected. However, the developments suggest that authorities are treating the case as a coordinated smuggling attempt rather than an isolated incident.

Ongoing Investigation

Drug trafficking remains a serious concern in the Maldives, particularly through international entry points. Cases involving foreign nationals working alongside local contacts often raise broader questions about cross-border networks and organized operations.

For now, investigators continue to gather evidence, examine digital communications, and determine the full extent of the alleged collaboration.

As the case unfolds, further details are expected to emerge through court proceedings and official briefings.
