Family Court Recovers Over MVR 25 Million in Child Support During First Half of 2025
The Family Court of the Maldives has released its mid-year report, revealing that more than MVR 25 million in child support and maintenance payments were successfully recovered and disbursed in the first six months of 2025.
According to data shared by the court, MVR 44 million in total payments were ordered between January and June. Out of that, MVR 24 million was paid directly through the court system, with MVR 25 million reaching beneficiaries under court supervision.
Over 1,000 Family Cases Handled in Six Months
From January to June 2025, the Family Court registered 1,024 new cases. Within the same period, the court concluded proceedings in 1,009 cases, reflecting a steady pace in case resolution despite the high caseload.
The court also processed a significant number of legal summonses, issuing 5,767 notices to individuals required to appear in court. These ranged from family disputes to child welfare concerns.
Marriage and Divorce Trends: Over 1,200 Weddings and 588 Divorces
A total of 1,226 marriages were officially registered at the Family Court in the first half of 2025. This includes 19 cross-national marriages involving Maldivians and foreign nationals, and 113 marriages that were formalized abroad but registered locally.
At the same time, 588 divorces were granted by the court, offering a glimpse into the shifting dynamics of family life in the Maldives.
Meanwhile, the court’s public outreach efforts continued through its marriage awareness programs, which saw participation from 1,580 individuals seeking guidance on marriage responsibilities, legal procedures, and relationship readiness.
Legal Protection and Mediation Efforts
The court issued 55 protective orders during this period, covering matters such as domestic violence and safeguarding children’s rights.
In addition, the Family Disputes Resolution Section handled 80 cases, with 69 of them resolved through mediated agreements. These out-of-court settlements reflect the court’s ongoing focus on reducing legal conflict and supporting peaceful resolutions where possible.

The mid-year update offers a broader picture of how the Family Court is working to uphold legal responsibilities, ensure child welfare, and support families through both preventative education and legal intervention.
