IGMH to Launch Affordable Prescription Glasses Shop This Month
The Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) will soon open a new prescription glasses shop, offering affordable eyewear options to the public. CEO Ibrahim Haleem confirmed that the shop will start operations later this month, marking a significant step toward reducing the high costs faced by many Maldivians when purchasing glasses.
Affordable Eyewear for All
This development comes after President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu announced in May the government’s plan to provide reasonably priced eyewear through state-run facilities. The new shop at IGMH will sell prescription glasses and also offer prescription services. Customers will have the convenience of bringing in prescriptions from other clinics or optometrists, expanding access for those already diagnosed elsewhere.
IGMH will import frames and lenses directly from overseas suppliers. According to Haleem, prices will be kept within the limits of the current Aasandha allowance of MVR 2,000, which has recently doubled from MVR 1,000. This ensures that glasses remain affordable for the average Maldivian, easing financial strain for families who rely on government health benefits.
Filling a Crucial Gap in Vision Care
While IGMH has long provided treatment for eye diseases and conditions, it has not previously offered vision correction or eyewear sales. Until now, private providers have dominated the prescription glasses market in the Maldives. Many have voiced concerns about steep prices and limited options, which made accessing affordable eyewear difficult for many.
The addition of a repair workshop within the new facility will further support patients by providing an on-site service to maintain and fix glasses, adding convenience and long-term value.
A Clear Message from the President
Speaking to PSM, President Muizzu underscored the government’s determination to protect citizens from unfair pricing in the private market. He acknowledged that private sellers may be displeased by the new competition, but stressed that everyone must now compete on a level playing field.
“People deserve affordable care without being taken advantage of,” the president said. His comments highlight a wider effort by the government to make essential healthcare services more accessible and fair for all Maldivians.
For many who have struggled to afford prescription glasses, the IGMH’s new shop will bring much-needed relief. By offering quality frames and lenses at controlled prices, the hospital is setting a precedent that could influence eyewear costs across the country.
The move also reflects growing awareness of how important vision care is to overall health and daily life. With this initiative, more Maldivians can expect to have access to affordable and reliable vision correction in the near future.
