President Muizzu Announces MVR 1 Billion for Housing Projects in 2026

President Muizzu Pledges MVR 1 Billion for Housing Projects in 2026

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has revealed that the government will launch housing projects worth MVR 1 billion next year, as part of a long-term strategy to tackle the Maldives’ housing crisis.

Speaking during a visit to Manadhoo in Noonu Atoll, the President emphasized that access to safe and affordable housing remains one of the country’s most pressing challenges. He noted that significant funds have already been directed toward housing development this year and reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to expanding these efforts in the years ahead.

A Long-Term Housing Commitment

President Muizzu acknowledged that while his administration is determined to resolve the housing shortage, launching projects across every island within a single year would be unrealistic. However, he confirmed that multiple housing developments will be initiated in phases, starting in 2026 with an allocation of MVR 1 billion.

Manadhoo, one of the most populous islands in Noonu Atoll, has already begun to benefit from the government’s housing plans. The President announced that 50 housing units are currently in development, with another 50 units scheduled to begin construction next year.

As part of the broader housing strategy, the government also launched a loan scheme under the “Hiyaavehi” program, designed to make homeownership more accessible by offering loans at a low interest rate.

Broader Development Plans for Manadhoo

In addition to housing, President Muizzu outlined several infrastructure and public service projects aimed at improving the overall quality of life for Manadhoo residents.

Sewerage and Road Development:
Manadhoo has struggled with sewerage issues for over a decade. The President shared that the Road Development Corporation (RDC) will take charge of addressing these concerns. A complete sewerage system is expected to be implemented by the end of next year, with road construction scheduled to begin shortly after.

Healthcare Expansion:
The President placed strong emphasis on healthcare. A new hospital will be built on the island, while therapy and mental health services will begin this year. He highlighted the importance of offering both preventive care and effective treatment, stressing that every citizen deserves access to comprehensive healthcare. Several health facilities across the country are expected to open this month, with more projects in progress.

To improve medical access for Manadhoo residents, a new RTL ferry route to R. Ungoofaaru Regional Hospital will begin in November. The route aims to make travel for healthcare easier and more efficient.

Education and Youth Facilities:
The government will complete a school project that was handed over by the previous administration. The project, which is already 75 percent complete, faced delays but will now be expedited to meet urgent education needs.

New recreational facilities are also part of the plan. These include a fitness and recreation club, an outdoor gym, and a volleyball court, offering more activities and healthier lifestyles for the youth.

Islamic University Campus:
An Islamic university campus will also be established in Manadhoo, adding to the island’s educational infrastructure and providing more opportunities for higher education within the region.

Moving Forward with Community Development

Throughout his speech, President Muizzu reiterated the importance of ensuring development reaches every corner of the Maldives. He stressed that the government’s approach involves careful planning and sustained investment over time, rather than rushed or scattered efforts.

By combining housing, healthcare, education, and transport into a unified development strategy, the government hopes to not only ease immediate challenges but lay the foundation for a more balanced and prosperous future for island communities like Manadhoo.
