Shaheed Ali School Set to Open in Hulhumalé Phase 2 with Over 500 Students Already Enrolled
President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has announced that the new government school under construction in Hulhumalé Phase 2 will be named Shaheed Ali School, in honor of national hero Shaheed Ali Rasgefaanu.
The announcement was made by Education Minister Dr. Ismail Shafeeu during a recent site inspection. The school is being built by Rasheed Carpentry and Construction (RCC), with work having commenced in December 2023. Construction is expected to be completed by November 2025, and classes are scheduled to begin in January 2026.
A Modern Campus with a Strong Community Focus
The new Shaheed Ali School is designed to accommodate up to 1,500 students in a single session and will offer education from Grades 1 through 10. The facility will house 54 classrooms, each designed to hold 32 students, providing a spacious and comfortable learning environment.
In response to the area's increasing population and education needs, the Ministry of Education is prepared to introduce a two-session system if student demand surpasses capacity. This would allow more students—especially from nearby areas like Malé and Hulhumalé Phase 1—to attend school closer to home.
According to Minister Shafeeu, the new school will stand out not only for its size but also for its state-of-the-art infrastructure. Highlights include:
-
Three elevators, each with a 20-person capacity
-
Air-conditioned classrooms for optimal comfort
-
A full solar-powered energy system, emphasizing sustainability
-
The largest school library in the Malé region
-
A multi-purpose auditorium, hall, and staff canteen
Strong Interest Reflects Urgent Need
The announcement of the new school has sparked strong interest from families across the Greater Malé Region. According to the Education Ministry, more than 500 students have already submitted enrollment applications since the process opened last month. Of these, 525 applications have come from students currently residing in Hulhumalé Phase 2 but attending schools elsewhere.
Dr. Shafeeu highlighted that over 800 students from Phase 2 are currently enrolled in schools outside their neighborhood. The ministry views Shaheed Ali School as a crucial development in bringing quality education closer to home for many families.
Currently, Salahuddin School is the only school in Hulhumalé Phase 2 that offers all grade levels. Government officials have previously noted that the area will eventually require at least seven additional schools to meet the growing educational demand.
