Charges Dropped After Defendant Found Unfit for Trial in Sexual Abuse Case

The Prosecutor General's Office (PG Office) has withdrawn charges against an individual accused of sexually abusing a minor after a court-ordered medical assessment found the defendant unable to stand trial.

The PG Office had previously appealed a Magistrate Court ruling that acquitted the defendant of the charges. The High Court report confirms that on August 6, the PG Office formally requested the court to drop the case.

The alleged incident took place in a southern atoll, but the High Court has not revealed the type of case, the specific island, the Magistrate Court involved, or the identity of the defendant. Reports indicate that the case concerns the sexual abuse of an underage girl.

The High Court report states that the PG Office no longer wished to pursue the charges due to the length of time since the incident, which happened over six years ago, and because the medical assessment determined the defendant could not participate in a trial.

The PG Office also informed the court that police are coordinating with the island council to provide appropriate treatment to the defendant.

The three-judge panel, consisting of Judge Mohamed Niyaz, Judge Abdul Maaniu Hussain, and Judge Abdulla Jameel Moosa, unanimously agreed to cancel the charges following the PG Office’s request.

The ruling formally ends the legal proceedings in this case while ensuring that the defendant receives the necessary care and support.
