A senior employee at the Housing Development Corporation (HDC) has been suspended following allegations that she misused her position to influence land allocations. Sources indicate that the employee, a woman, is accused of facilitating land deals in the Hulhumale and Thilafushi areas through her official role.
The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) is reportedly investigating several cases connected to her actions, although further details about the suspension have not been publicly released.
This suspension comes amid ongoing changes within HDC under the leadership of Managing Director Ali Zuhair. During the early months of his tenure, several department heads were removed from their posts. Since then, five of these officials have been reassigned to different departments.
In December of last year, multiple HDC employees were suspended in connection with corruption allegations related to the Gedhoruveriya and Binveriya housing schemes. A total of 17 employees were affected. Following investigations, three employees were dismissed, one resigned, and the remaining 13 were reinstated in April after their suspensions were lifted. Some of the former employees also appealed to the labor tribunal and successfully challenged their suspensions.
The recent suspension shows that HDC and the government are actively monitoring land management and working to hold employees accountable. Officials have stressed that investigations are still underway and that no final decisions have been made about the employee’s alleged actions.
Residents and stakeholders in the housing sector are closely watching these developments, given the impact land allocations can have on urban development and housing opportunities in Male’ and surrounding areas.
