Japan Donates Five Speedboats to Maldives Police Service

In a gesture of continued support, the government of Japan has gifted five new speedboats to the Maldives Police Service, enhancing the agency’s capabilities for marine operations.

The handover ceremony took place today at K. Dhoonidhoo, where Japanese Ambassador Ishigami Rumiko officially presented the vessels to Commissioner of Police Ismail Naveen. Deputy Commissioner Farhad Fikry, senior officers of the Maldives Police Service, and representatives from the Japanese government were also in attendance.

Commissioner Naveen expressed gratitude to the Japanese government for their ongoing support. He noted that the addition of the speedboats would significantly improve the Police’s ability to patrol and enforce law across the country’s extensive maritime territory. He emphasized that the vessels would be operated responsibly and with full commitment to public safety.

Ambassador Ishigami highlighted that the donation is intended to increase the capacity of the marine police and strengthen safety and security at sea. She said the vessels are expected to help the Police address challenges in maritime law enforcement more effectively.

In recognition of Japan’s contribution, the Maldives Police presented an honorary plaque to the Japanese government, thanking them for their long-standing assistance.

Japan has been a consistent supporter of Maldives’ law enforcement agencies. Last year, the Japanese government donated 54 cars and four vans to the Maldives Police Service, along with various equipment. In previous years, Japan has also provided vehicles and essential tools to the Maldives National Defence Force and Customs.

With these new vessels, the Maldives Police Service is better equipped to respond to emergencies, conduct patrols, and maintain safety in the nation’s waters. The partnership between Japan and the Maldives continues to strengthen maritime law enforcement and enhance public security.
