State Moves to Recover Remaining MVR 1 Million Fine from Former VP Ahmed Adeeb

The Maldivian government has filed a petition in the Civil Court to enforce payment of an unpaid MVR 1 million portion of a MVR 2 million fine imposed on former Vice President Ahmed Adeeb.

Adeeb was previously sentenced by the Criminal Court to 20 years in prison and fined MVR 2 million after being convicted on seven counts of corruption related to the Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC) scandal. While he has paid half of the fine, the remaining MVR 1 million has yet to be settled.

The prosecution initially filed a case in January seeking recovery of the unpaid sum. The Civil Court ordered Adeeb to pay the full amount within one month. With the fine still unpaid, authorities have now requested enforcement of the judgment.

However, an official from the Attorney General’s Office noted that enforcement cannot currently take place because Adeeb has no funds in his bank account and does not own any property under his name.

Despite the original 20-year prison sentence, a previous agreement during the administration of former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih reduced Adeeb’s remaining term to just four days, resulting in his release. Since then, Adeeb has left the country.

The case remains under the court’s consideration as authorities explore ways to recover the outstanding fine from Adeeb.
