State Requests Withdrawal of MVR 1.1 Million Rent Enforcement for Newport View Restaurant

The Civil Court has canceled the enforcement order requiring Strada Private Limited to pay MVR 1.1 million in unpaid rent for the Newport View Restaurant property after a request from the state.

The waterfront plot was leased to Strada in September 2016 under an agreement with the Housing Ministry. The company was expected to develop the land into a food outlet.

In September 2019, the Civil Court had ordered Strada to pay the outstanding MVR 1.1 million within 30 days. The company was also instructed to vacate the premises, located next to Lonuziyaaraiy Park, within 15 days. Both the High Court and the Supreme Court later upheld this ruling.

Despite returning the land to the state, the rent remained unpaid. Enforcement proceedings had already begun when the Civil Court canceled the lawsuit at the state’s request to allow for a thorough review of the matter.

An official from the Attorney General’s Office stated that the lawsuit was withdrawn after the disputed land was returned to the state. The official also confirmed that the case will be refiled once the MVR 1.1 million rent claim has been thoroughly examined and assessed.

It allows the state time to review the situation fully while maintaining the option to recover the owed rent after the review is complete.
