Supreme Court Applauds Fixed Revenue Allocation to Boost Judicial Efficiency

The Supreme Court has hailed President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s plan to allocate a fixed percentage of next year’s state revenue to the judiciary, describing it as a landmark move that will strengthen the courts’ financial independence and accelerate the administration of justice.

President Muizzu Emphasizes Judicial Autonomy

President Muizzu revealed that the proposal was discussed during a Cabinet meeting yesterday, where officials focused on boosting both the financial and administrative autonomy of the judiciary. He underscored that ensuring a predictable and independent budget is crucial for the courts to function effectively and without external pressures.

From Budget Ceilings to Predictable Funding

Previously, the judiciary operated under strict budget ceilings that limited its ability to plan and execute essential functions. Under the new system, it will receive a block grant based on a fixed percentage of state revenue—a significant increase from previous allocations. This shift is expected to provide the judiciary with greater stability and flexibility in managing its resources.

Supreme Court Welcomes the Move

The Supreme Court praised the initiative in a statement on social media platform X, calling it a “historic step” toward resolving long-standing financial challenges within the justice system. “We believe this decision will accelerate the administration of justice and strengthen the foundations of an independent judiciary,” the Court said, adding that it appreciates the President’s efforts to introduce legal and systemic reforms that ensure the change is sustainable over the long term.

Financial Independence as a Key to Judicial Effectiveness

For years, limited financial autonomy has been cited as a barrier preventing the judiciary from operating free of external influence. Experts say that with dedicated funding, the judiciary will be better positioned to manage its operations efficiently, recruit skilled personnel, and implement reforms without political or bureaucratic constraints.

By securing a reliable revenue stream, the judiciary can now plan long-term initiatives, reduce delays in case handling, and reinforce public trust in the justice system.
