The Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) has successfully conducted the first peritoneal dialysis catheter insertion surgery in the Maldives, marking a significant advancement in the country’s healthcare capabilities. This achievement officially inaugurates IGMH’s comprehensive peritoneal dialysis service.
A specialized team of Maldivian doctors, trained across surgery, urology, anaesthesia, and nephrology, performed the procedure, highlighting the growing expertise within the nation’s medical community.
Peritoneal dialysis offers patients the ability to receive treatment safely and comfortably at home, reducing the need for frequent hospital visits. The procedure involves inserting a soft tube, known as a peritoneal dialysis catheter, into the abdominal cavity through a small incision. This catheter allows dialysis fluid to flow in and out, effectively filtering waste products from the blood. Surgeons can perform the operation using either traditional open methods or minimally invasive laparoscopic techniques.
According to Ibrahim Abdul Razzaq Haleem, CEO of the Male’ City Group of Hospitals (MCGH), IGMH has been offering peritoneal dialysis services for the past 18 months. The introduction of catheter insertion surgery now completes the full spectrum of the hospital’s peritoneal dialysis program. Haleem added that additional training sessions are underway to strengthen and expand the service further.
The successful surgery represents a crucial milestone for the Maldives’ healthcare system, particularly as the number of patients requiring dialysis continues to grow. The government has been actively introducing modern technologies to enhance both the quality and accessibility of dialysis care nationwide, ensuring that patients receive timely and efficient treatment close to home.

މި އޮޕަރޭޝަނަކީ، ހޮސްޕިޓަލުގައި ޕެރިޓޯނިއަލް ޑައިލިސިސްގެ ޚިދުމަތް ރަސްމީކޮށް ފެށުމުގެ ގޮތުން ކުރެވުނު ކަމެކެވެ. މި މަސައްކަތް ކޮށްފައިވަނީ ސަރޖަރީ، ޔޫރޮލޮޖީ، އެނެސްތީސިއާ އަދި ނެފްރޮލޮޖީގެ ރޮނގުން ތަމްރީނު ލިބިފައިވާ ދިވެހި ޑޮކްޓަރުންގެ ޚާއްސަ ޓީމަކުންނެވެ.

ޕެރިޓޯނިއަލް ޑައިލިސިސްގެ ސަބަބުން ބަލިމީހުންނަށް ޑައިލިސިސްގެ ފަރުވާ އަމިއްލަ ގޭގައި ރައްކާތެރިކަމާއެކު، ތަކުރާރުކޮށް ހޮސްޕިޓަލަށް ދާން ނުޖެހި، ތަދެއް ނެތި ލިބޭނެއެވެ. މި އޮޕަރޭޝަނުގައި ބަނޑުގެ މަދު ދޮރަކުން، "ޕެރިޓޯނިއަލް ޑައިލިސިސް ކެތީޓާ" ގެ ނަމުން މަޝްހޫރު މަޑު ހޮޅިއެއް ބަނޑުގެ ތެރެއަށް (އެބްޑޮމިނަލް ކެވީޓީއަށް) ލައްވަނީއެވެ. މީގެ ސަބަބުން ޑައިލިސިސް ފްލޫއިޑް ބަނޑުގެ ތެރެއަށް ދަތުރުކޮށް، ލޭގައި ހުންނަ ބޭކާރު މާއްދާތައް ފިލްޓަރުކޮށް، ބޭރުކޮށްލުމަށް މަގުފަހިވެއެވެ.
