Maldives Customs has destroyed more than three million cigarettes that were seized after being illegally brought into the country, officials confirmed.
The destruction involved 199 cases of cigarettes, totaling 3.1 million sticks, which had been held under Customs custody. The confiscated goods were incinerated yesterday at Dhoonidhoo, following standard procedures for illegal imports.
The smuggled cigarettes were intercepted while entering the Maldives in violation of national laws. Authorities say the incident comes shortly after the mysterious disappearance of over 13 million cigarettes from two 40-foot containers seized last year. Those containers had been imported under the name of Saudi Arabia’s Binladin Group.
The seized stock had been stored at MPL Hulhumalé Port for more than a year while investigations were ongoing. Customs officials reported discovering the missing goods earlier this month, prompting further action.
In connection with the missing cigarettes case, 12 individuals have been prohibited from leaving the country, and four people have been taken into custody. Among those arrested are two well-known Maldivian businessmen: Mohamed Waheed (Dhigali), owner of Apollo Company, and Ahmed Aarif (Aattey), owner of Lotus stores.
Authorities also detained Muaz Ali, a former Customs officer, and Ziwar Ismail, a current Customs employee, in relation to the ongoing investigation. Officials have yet to release further details about potential charges.
Customs authorities emphasized that the destruction of illegal tobacco products serves as a strong deterrent against smuggling and reinforces the country’s commitment to enforcing import regulations. “Illegal trade threatens both public health and the integrity of our borders,” a Customs spokesperson said.
With rising vigilance, Maldives Customs continues to monitor shipments closely to prevent similar incidents in the future.

13 މިލިއަން ސިނގިރޭޓު ގެއްލުމުގެ މައްސަލަ:
މި ބޮޑު ޢަދަދެއްގެ ސިނގިރޭޓު ނައްތާލާފައި މިވަނީ، މީގެ ކުރިން ކަސްޓަމްސްއިން ހިފެހެއްޓި، 13 މިލިއަނަށް ވުރެ ގިނަ ސިނގިރޭޓު ހިމެނޭ ދެ ކޮންޓެއިނަރު ގެއްލިފައިވާ މައްސަލައެއް ފެންމަތިވެފައި ވަނިކޮށެވެ. އެ ސިނގިރޭޓުތައް ހިމެނޭ ކޮންޓެއިނަރުތައް ހިފެހެއްޓާފައިވަނީ ސަޢޫދީ އަރަބިއްޔާގެ ބިންލާދިން ގްރޫޕުގެ ނަމުގައި ވަގަށް އެތެރެކުރަން އުޅެނިކޮށެވެ.
އެ މުދާ ގެއްލިފައިވާކަން ކަސްޓަމްސްއަށް އެނގިފައިވަނީ މި މަހު ކުރީކޮޅުގައެވެ. މައްސަލައެއްގައި ތަޙުޤީޤު ކުރާތީ، ގެއްލުނު މުދާތައް އެމްޕީއެލްގެ ހުޅުމާލެ ޕޯޓުގައި އެއް އަހަރަށް ވުރެ ގިނަ ދުވަސް ވަންދެން ބަހައްޓާފައި ހުއްޓެވެ.
މައްސަލައާ ގުޅިގެން 12 މީހުން ދަތުރުކުރުން މަނާކޮށް، 4 މީހުން ހައްޔަރުކޮށްފި:
ސިނގިރޭޓު ގެއްލުމުގެ މި މައްސަލައާ ގުޅިގެން 12 މީހަކު ރާއްޖެއިން ބޭރަށް ދިއުން މަނާކޮށްފައިވާއިރު، ހަތަރު މީހަކު ވަނީ ހައްޔަރުކޮށްފައެވެ. ހައްޔަރުކުރި މީހުންގެ ތެރޭގައި ރާއްޖޭގެ ދެ މަޝްހޫރު ވިޔަފާރިވެރިއެއް ކަމަށްވާ، އެޕޮލޯ ކުންފުނީގެ ވެރިޔާ މުޙައްމަދު ވަޙީދު (ދިގަލި) އާއި ލޯޓަސް ސްޓޯރސްގެ ވެރިޔާ އަޙްމަދު އާރިފް (އާއްޓޭ) ހިމެނެއެވެ. މީގެ އިތުރުން، މައްސަލައާ ގުޅިގެން ޝައްކުކުރެވޭ މީހުންގެ ތެރޭގައި ކުރިން ކަސްޓަމްސްގެ އޮފިސަރެއްގެ ގޮތުގައި މަސައްކަތްކުރި މުޢާޒު ޢަލީ އާއި، މިހާރު ކަސްޓަމްސްގައި މަސައްކަތްކުރާ ޒިވާރު އިސްމާޢީލް ވެސް ހިމެނެއެވެ.
