The Ministry of Housing has announced that more than 2,000 land registries have been issued to recipients allocated plots from K. Gulhifalhu, marking another major step in the government’s ongoing land distribution program.
Registry Distribution Progresses Smoothly
According to the Ministry, registry distribution began on July 12 and has since seen 2,032 eligible recipients successfully collect their documents. Officials have extended the deadline for appointment requests to next Thursday, allowing more beneficiaries time to complete the process.
The Ministry encouraged remaining recipients to schedule their appointments promptly to avoid delays, emphasizing the government’s commitment to ensuring a transparent and organized allocation system.
Land Reclamation and Project Background
The Gulhifalhu reclamation project—a significant part of the government’s housing expansion efforts—commenced in July 2024. Dutch dredging and marine contractor Boskalis was awarded the project for a total of USD 120 million (approximately MVR 2 billion).
Initially, the land draw to determine recipients was carried out by the previous administration. However, the current government later reviewed and revised the Gulhifalhu land use plan twice to address planning inconsistencies and improve allocation efficiency.
Revised Draw and Updated Registries
Following a re-draw held on May 30 under the revised plan, the Housing Ministry began issuing updated land registries to recipients in line with the new framework. These changes, officials noted, were made to ensure fairness and compliance with national housing regulations.
The Ministry further stated that the land plot agreements were also amended to align with existing legal standards, citing inconsistencies found in earlier versions of the agreements.
The distribution of over 2,000 land registries represents a crucial milestone in the government’s broader initiative to increase homeownership opportunities for Maldivians. The Gulhifalhu project, in particular, is expected to play a central role in addressing housing shortages in the Greater Malé Region by providing residential plots on newly reclaimed land.
As the Ministry continues the distribution process, more recipients are expected to receive their registries in the coming weeks.
