After weeks of limited availability, 10kg cooking gas cylinders are back on sale across the Maldives following the arrival of a new shipment, bringing relief to households that had been adjusting to smaller alternatives.
State Trading Organization (STO) confirmed that its subsidiary, Maldive Gas, received additional stock, allowing normal distribution to resume starting today.
Shortage Eases as New Supply Reaches Maldives
The recent shortage had forced suppliers to scale back availability, with 10kg cylinders temporarily taken off the shelves. Instead, consumers were offered smaller 5kg cylinders to manage rising demand and limited supply.
According to STO, the newly arrived shipment has helped stabilize the situation, making it possible to restore regular sales. The shipment reached the Maldives last Friday, marking a turning point after weeks of constrained supply.
For many households, the return of 10kg cylinders comes as a welcome change. Smaller cylinders, while helpful, often require more frequent refills, adding inconvenience and cost over time.
Global Tensions Drive Up Fuel and Gas Prices
The disruption in supply is closely tied to ongoing geopolitical tensions in the Middle East. The conflict, which escalated following attacks involving the United States and Israel targeting Iran, has had a ripple effect on global energy markets.

This is not the first time STO has adjusted its distribution strategy in response to supply challenges. Last month, 7kg cylinders were introduced at discounted rates as an alternative to the standard 10kg option.
Similarly, during Ramadan, a period when demand for cooking gas typically rises, STO ensured that a fresh shipment was brought in to maintain supply. At that time, sales of 10kg cylinders were briefly restored before the latest shortage emerged.
These measures highlight the balancing act between supply constraints and consumer needs, especially during high-demand periods.
Government Monitoring Prices and Future Supply
While global price increases have pushed up the cost of fuel and gas, STO has already adjusted its selling prices accordingly. However, the government has indicated that it is working to prevent further hikes.
Officials have stated that current prices can still be managed without additional increases, offering some reassurance to the public amid ongoing uncertainty.
