Indian Expat Working at Island Aviation Killed in Hulhumalé Highway Crash

A tragic road accident on the Hulhumalé highway late Tuesday night claimed the life of an Indian expatriate who had reportedly worked for Island Aviation for the past decade.

Police said the fatal collision occurred at approximately 10:12 p.m. when the victim lost control of his motorcycle while traveling along the highway connecting Malé and Hulhumalé.

Motorcycle Skidded Before Collision

According to police findings, the motorcycle skidded on the road and slipped, throwing the rider underneath an oncoming lorry operated by Malé Water and Sewerage Company.

Authorities said the driver of the heavy vehicle was unable to stop in time. The lorry then ran over the victim, causing fatal injuries at the scene.

Emergency responders and police officers arrived shortly after the incident. Officers covered the victim’s body while waiting for ambulance personnel to reach the area.

Victim Identified as Indian National

Police later confirmed that the deceased was a 50-year-old Indian national residing in Malé.

Local media reports stated that the man had been employed as a driver at Island Aviation for around ten years. He was reportedly returning to Malé after completing his work shift when the accident occurred.

The victim is survived by his wife and two children, who were living with him in the capital.

Concerns Over Highway Safety Continue

The fatal accident has once again drawn attention to safety concerns along the busy Hulhumalé highway, which sees heavy traffic from motorcycles, buses, and large vehicles throughout the day and late into the night.

Serious accidents involving motorcycles remain a recurring issue in the Maldives, particularly on high-speed roads connecting the Greater Malé region. Questions over road conditions, speeding, and visibility during nighttime travel continue to be raised following such incidents.

Police have not yet released additional details regarding the ongoing investigation.
