The Maldives has taken a major step toward advancing its digital future with the official launch of the National AI and Data Competency Center, widely known as the Maldives AI Lab.
The platform, created through a partnership between Bank of Maldives and MindCo, was inaugurated on Wednesday during the opening ceremony of the CoLab 26 national program.
The launch ceremony was attended by senior officials and industry representatives, with Home Minister Ali Ihusaan officially unveiling the initiative.
Maldives AI Lab Introduced Under ‘Maldives 2.0’ Vision
The AI-focused platform was established under President Mohamed Muizzu’s “Maldives 2.0” digital transformation agenda, which aims to modernize public services and strengthen the country’s technological capabilities.
According to organizers, the Maldives AI Lab will serve as a national platform to promote responsible and effective use of artificial intelligence and data services across government institutions and key industries.
The initiative is expected to focus on improving public service delivery, increasing operational efficiency, strengthening governance systems, and maximizing the value of AI-related investments.
Officials say the project also seeks to encourage collaboration between the government, private sector, and technology experts to build long-term national expertise in AI and data-driven innovation.
Focus on Citizen-Centered Digital Services
Speaking at the launch event, MindCo Managing Director Saeeda Umar said the new center was created to help accelerate digital transformation in the Maldives.
She explained that the platform aims to modernize public services, streamline work processes, and support stronger governance frameworks through emerging technologies.
Saeeda noted that establishing a national-level AI and data center reflects the importance of investing in foundational digital resources as the Maldives prepares for its next phase of development.
She also emphasized the need for AI solutions tailored specifically to the Maldives.
According to her, a dedicated national center will help create technology solutions that align with Maldivian culture, local institutions, and the country’s unique environment. In a rapidly changing digital world, that local focus could prove essential.
BML Highlights National Development Role
Meanwhile, BML CEO and Managing Director Mohamed Shareef highlighted the growing importance of AI and data technologies in modern governance and business operations.
He stated that artificial intelligence has the potential to improve public services, strengthen institutions, support businesses, and ensure equal opportunities for communities across the Maldives.
Shareef said the role of the national bank extends beyond traditional banking services, adding that institutions must also contribute to national development and economic sustainability.
He expressed hope that the newly launched competency center would help strengthen local expertise in emerging technologies and support the growth of a stronger digital ecosystem across the country.
“Our hope is to advance Maldivian talent, empower businesses and institutions, and build a robust digital ecosystem in the Maldives,” he said.
CoLab 26 Begins National AI Policy Discussions
The launch of the Maldives AI Lab coincided with the start of CoLab 26, a four-day national program designed to help shape the Maldives’ future policies and strategies on artificial intelligence.
The event brings together government officials, private sector representatives, software developers, and technical experts to discuss how AI can be responsibly integrated into national development plans.
During the first two days, discussions will focus on identifying priority sectors for AI adoption while considering national goals and public benefits.
The final two days will feature a hackathon led by industry experts, allowing participants to develop practical AI-driven solutions and innovative ideas.
Organizers say the program marks the beginning of broader national conversations on how the Maldives can responsibly embrace emerging technologies while ensuring long-term benefits for citizens across the islands.
