The Maldives Customs Service has seized more than 2.3 million smuggled cigarette sticks during a major operation carried out at the Male’ Commercial Harbour, authorities confirmed.
According to Customs, the operation took place on Thursday and resulted in the discovery of over 230 cases of cigarettes believed to have been brought into the country illegally. While officials confirmed the scale of the seizure, additional details surrounding the shipment and those involved have not yet been released.
Authorities estimate the street value of the confiscated cigarettes to exceed MVR 32 million, making it one of the larger tobacco-related seizures reported in recent months.
Customs Tightens Crackdown on Illegal Tobacco Trade
The latest seizure comes as authorities continue efforts to curb cigarette smuggling across the Maldives. In recent months, concerns have grown over an apparent increase in illegal tobacco imports following higher import duties imposed on tobacco products.
With cigarette prices rising due to increased taxes, officials believe some smugglers may be attempting to exploit the market by bringing in untaxed products through illegal channels. Law enforcement agencies have been stepping up inspections and monitoring operations at ports and cargo entry points as part of a broader crackdown.
Rising Smuggling Cases Raise Concerns
The issue of cigarette smuggling has drawn increasing public attention after several related incidents surfaced earlier this year. Previous investigations have also resulted in criminal charges linked to the theft of a container carrying confiscated cigarettes.
The latest operation highlights the ongoing challenges faced by authorities in preventing illegal tobacco products from entering the local market. It also underscores the high financial stakes involved in the underground cigarette trade.
Customs officials have not yet confirmed whether arrests were made in connection with Thursday’s seizure. Investigations into the case are expected to continue.
