Authorities have yet to make any arrests in connection with the mysterious disappearance of more than 13.6 million cigarettes that were under customs custody at the Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) Hulhumalé port.
The cigarettes, originally smuggled into the Maldives under the name of Saudi Arabia’s Bin Laden Group were seized by customs in April last year. On the night of October 8, officials discovered that two 40-foot containers holding the confiscated goods had gone missing.
Each container reportedly held 1,360 cases, amounting to 13.6 million cigarette sticks with an estimated street value of MVR 122 million.
While the Maldives Police Service has launched an investigation into the case, officials have so far refrained from commenting publicly.
According to sources, no arrests have been made at this stage.
“The investigation is going very fast,” said one source familiar with the matter, suggesting that authorities are actively pursuing leads.
Following reports of the disappearance, Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) confirmed on October 9 that it had begun an internal investigation. The company stated that while the police inquiry is ongoing, it cannot disclose further details. MPL also assured that appropriate action will be taken once the internal review is complete.
A senior customs official clarified that the containers had been properly seized and placed under MPL’s custody after all documentation was completed. The cigarettes had not yet been destroyed, as the initial investigation into the illegal shipment was still pending.
Customs first intercepted the contraband in a plywood shipment at the Hulhumalé Sea-Cargo Terminal. Officials determined that the cigarettes were being imported without the proper labeling and permits required under the Tobacco Labeling Regulations.
The case has since raised serious questions about security lapses and accountability within port operations, as well as the handling of seized goods.
As of now, both customs and police investigations remain ongoing, with the public awaiting answers on how millions of cigarettes vanished from a secure facility without a trace.

ގެއްލުނު ކޮންޓެއިނަރުތަކުގައި ޖުމްލަ 1,360 ކޭސް ހުއްޓެވެ. މިއީ 13.6 މިލިއަން ސިނގިރޭޓަށް އަދަދަވާ އަދަދެކެވެ. މި ސިނގިރޭޓްތަކުގެ އަންދާޒާ ކުރެވޭ އަގަކީ 122 މިލިއަން ރުފިޔާ އެވެ.
ފުލުހުން މި ހާދިސާ ތަޙްޤީޤު ކުރަމުންދާ ނަމަވެސް، މީޑިއާއަށް އެއްވެސް މަޢުލޫމާތެއް ދީފައެއް ނުވެއެވެ.
މައްސަލަ ތަޙްޤީޤު ކުރާ ފަރާތްތަކުން ބުނާ ގޮތުގައި މިހާތަނަށް އެއްވެސް މީހަކު ހައްޔަރުކޮށްފައި ނުވެއެވެ. ނަމަވެސް، ތަޙްޤީޤު ހަލުވި މިނުގައި ކުރިއަށް އެބަދެއެވެ.
މޯލްޑިވްސް ޕޯޓްސް ލިމިޓެޑް (އެމްޕީއެލް) އިން އޮކްޓޯބަރު 9 ގައި ޔަޤީންކޮށް ދެއްވާފައިވާ ގޮތުގައި ގެއްލުނު ސިނގިރޭޓްތަކާ ގުޅިގެން އިތުރު އިދާރީ ތަޙްޤީޤެއް ދަނީ ހިންގަމުންނެވެ. އެމްޕީއެލް އިން ބުނީ، ފުލުހުންގެ ތަޙްޤީޤު ކުރިއަށްދާތީ ތަފްސީލް ދެވެން ނެތް ކަމަށާއި، އެތެރޭގެ ނިޒާމީ ބަލާބެލުންތައް ނިމުމުން އަޅަންޖެހޭ ފިޔަވަޅުތައް އަޅާނެ ކަމަށެވެ.
ކަސްޓަމްސްގެ މަތީ މަޤާމެއް ފުރުއްވާ ބޭފުޅަކު ވިދާޅުވެފައިވަނީ، މި ކޮންޓެއިނަރުތައް ހިފެހެއްޓުމަށްފަހު، ޑޮކިއުމެންޓޭޝަން ނިންމައިގެން އެމްޕީއެލްގެ ބެލުމުގެ ދަށުގައި ބެހެއްޓުނީ ކަމަށެވެ. އަދި ޝިޕްމަންޓްގެ ތަޙްޤީޤު ނުނިމޭތީ، މި ތަކެތި އަދި ނައްތާލާފައި ނުވާ ކަމަށް ވެސް ވިދާޅުވިއެވެ.
ކަސްޓަމްސް އިން ފުރަތަމަ މި ސްމަގްލް ކުރި ސިނގިރޭޓްތައް ހިފެހެއްޓީ ހުޅުމާލެ ސީ-ކާގޯ ޓާމިނަލުން ޕްލައިވުޑް ޝިޕްމަންޓެއްގެ ތެރެއިންނެވެ. ޓޮބެކޯ ލޭބަލިންގ ޤަވާޢިދުތަކާ އެއްގޮތަށް، ސިނގިރޭޓް އިމްޕޯޓް ކުރެވޭނީ ބޭނުންވާ ލޭބަލްތަކާއި އިޒުނަ ލިބިގެން ކަމަށްވާއިރު، މި މައްސަލައިގައި މި ޤަވާޢިދުތަކާ ޚިލާފު ވެފައިވެއެވެ.
