Police Report MVR 1.3 Million Lost to Scams in October

The Maldives Police Service has revealed that over MVR 1.3 million was lost to various scams across the country in October alone, underscoring a continued rise in cyber and online fraud.

Growing Threat of Online Scams

According to official statistics, a total of 165 scam-related cases were filed last month. The largest portion involved e-commerce and online business fraud, which accounted for 86 cases—more than half of all reports received.

Authorities also identified 25 cases of currency exchange scams, 17 impersonation incidents, and 15 phishing, vishing, and job-related scams. An additional 22 cases were classified under other types of fraud.

Limited Recovery Despite Investigations

Out of the total MVR 1.3 million lost, police have managed to recover only MVR 400,000 so far. Investigations have concluded in 84 of the reported cases, while others remain under review.

Police say that despite efforts to trace transactions and identify perpetrators, the recovery process remains difficult—especially when victims transfer money through online platforms or international accounts.

How Scammers Operate

Authorities noted that most scams were executed through phone calls, phishing links, and online messaging apps, often impersonating legitimate businesses or government officials. Social media platforms, including Facebook Marketplace and eBay, were also common tools for fraudulent transactions.

These tactics often involve fake listings or deceptive offers that lure victims into transferring money upfront. Once payment is made, the scammers typically disappear, leaving no trace.

Police Urge Vigilance

The Maldives Police Service continues to urge the public to exercise caution when engaging in online transactions or responding to unfamiliar messages and calls. Officials emphasize the importance of verifying sources and avoiding sharing personal or banking details with unverified individuals.

With the rise of digital commerce and social media use, the police warn that scam operations are becoming more sophisticated. “Public awareness and quick reporting remain our strongest tools against these crimes,” the statement said.
