The Maldives has welcomed 1.7 million tourists so far this year, showing encouraging growth, but industry experts warn that the country may still fall short of its ambitious annual target of 2.3 million visitors. President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, in his recent Presidential Address, emphasized that reaching this milestone is one of his key priorities.
According to the Tourism Ministry, to achieve the year-end goal, the Maldives would need to attract roughly 600,000 tourists over the next two months. That would require monthly arrivals of around 300,000, a threshold the country has yet to reach in any month this year.
The highest monthly arrivals so far in 2024 were in February, with 217,000 tourists, closely followed by January, which saw 214,000 visitors. Even with a 10 percent increase in tourist numbers compared to last year, projections for the remaining months fall short of the target.
Current estimates suggest around 190,000 tourists will arrive in November, with December expected to see approximately 225,000 visitors. Together, these numbers would bring only about 415,000 tourists over the next two months—well below the 600,000 needed to meet the official target.
If the current trends continue, the Maldives is likely to see around 2.1 million tourists by the end of 2024. This figure would leave the country 200,000 visitors shy of the target and 100,000 below the projection included in the national budget.
Tourism promotion efforts this year were allocated MVR 154 million in the national budget. Visit Maldives had announced plans earlier in the year to double this amount to support stronger arrivals, but no increase in funding has been reported so far.
While tourist numbers continue to rise compared to last year, meeting the ambitious target may require intensified marketing campaigns and strategic efforts to attract visitors in the final months of 2024. The question remains: can Maldives close the gap and hit the 2.3 million milestone before the year ends?

މި އަހަރު، މިދިޔަ އަހަރާ އަޅާ ބަލާއިރު ފަތުރުވެރިންގެ ޢަދަދު 10 އިންސައްތަ އިތުރުވެފައިވެއެވެ. މި އިންސައްތައަށް ބަލާއިރު ވެސް، ކުރިއަށް ހުރި ދެ މަހުގައި ލަފާކުރެވޭ އަދަދުތައް ތިރީގައި އެވަނީއެވެ.
- ނޮވެމްބަރު: ގާތްގަނޑަކަށް 190,000 ފަތުރުވެރިން.
- ޑިސެމްބަރު: ގާތްގަނޑަކަށް 225,000 ފަތުރުވެރިން.
މިގޮތަށް ލަފާކުރާއިރު، ކުރިއަށް އޮތް ދެ މަހުގެ ޖުމްލަ ފަތުރުވެރިންގެ ޢަދަދު ގާތްގަނޑަކަށް 400،000 އަށް އަރާނެއެވެ.
ޓާގެޓަށް ވާސިލްނުވާނެ:
ފަތުރުވެރިންގެ މިހާރުގެ ޓްރެންޑްތައް ދެމިހުރެއްޖެނަމަ، މި އަހަރުގެ ނިޔަލަށް ރާއްޖެއަށް އެންމެ ގިނަމަ 2.1 މިލިއަން ފަތުރުވެރިން ލިބޭނެކަމަށް ލަފާކުރެވެއެވެ. މިއީ ސަރުކާރުގެ ޓާގެޓަށްވުރެ 200،000 މަދު އަދަދެކެވެ. އަދި މިއީ ޤައުމީ ބަޖެޓުގައި ކަނޑައަޅާފައިވާ ޓާގެޓަށްވުރެ 100،000 މަދު އަދަދެކެވެ.
