A tragic maritime accident unfolded near K. Eriyadhoo early Thursday when a landing craft carrying seven passengers overturned, resulting in one confirmed death and two people reported missing.
The vessel, Almaak Fiya, a 100-foot landing craft operated by construction company Almaak Maldives, departed from Malé City shortly before midnight. Sometime later, the craft capsized, leaving authorities racing to respond to the emergency.
The Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) Coast Guard Second Squadron swiftly launched a rescue operation, managing to save four of the seven passengers. Divers recovered the body of one individual from underwater during Thursday morning operations. The search continues for the two remaining missing persons.
The identities of those aboard, including the deceased, have not yet been released by authorities. The Almaak Fiya has reportedly sunk, adding urgency to the ongoing search and recovery efforts.
