In a brazen early-morning robbery at Velana International Airport, two masked assailants stole a cash-filled suitcase from Bank of Maldives (BML) employees The suitcase reportedly contained close to USD 130,000.
Sources close to the investigation revealed that the thieves threatened the bank staff with knives before snatching the money. The cash was intended for distribution to local travelers departing the country this morning.
The robbery occurred in the walkway connecting the old terminal and the new Terminal 1. Eyewitnesses reported that the suspects sprayed an unknown liquid in the faces of Aviation Security Command officers on duty, using it as a distraction while brandishing knives.
Authorities say the thieves made their escape via a speedboat docked at the VIA jetty, leaving airport and police personnel scrambling to respond.
Police confirmed receiving reports of the theft at around 4:45 a.m. today, involving two masked robbers and a cash-laden suitcase. It was later clarified that the BML employees did not have police security escorting them during the cash transport.
As of now, no additional information has been released by either the Police or Bank of Maldives. Authorities are actively investigating the incident and reviewing security footage to identify the perpetrators.
